Preserving the Moving Image
1964–todayCinema history is also the history of what can still be seen. A film may be remembered through songs and posters even when a complete print is gone. Archives seek out film elements and the documents around them.

More than a reel
NFDC–National Film Archive of India preserves and documents films, photographs, posters, song booklets and other material. These objects help researchers recover the circumstances of a production even when the film itself is damaged or missing.
The Film Heritage Foundation describes major losses from nitrate fires, chemical decay, humidity and poor storage. Preservation begins with locating and caring for originals.
Restoration is a process
Scanning can improve access, but a digital file alone does not repair every problem in a source element. Restoration involves research, physical care and decisions about the look and sound of a work.
Digital distribution lets many people see films, while long-term storage requires ongoing migration and stewardship. The safest historical claim is tied to surviving evidence and its provenance.
